Iran has warned that any further US attacks on its interests or security could be met with a faster, heavier and more painful response as military tensions between Tehran and Washington continue to escalate.
Iran has issued a new warning to the United States as tensions between the two countries continue to rise, with Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf saying that any further attack against Iranian interests or national security would trigger a stronger response.
Speaking on Sunday, Ghalibaf said Tehran believes the rules governing the confrontation with Washington have changed. He argued that Iran is no longer prepared to respond to attacks on a strictly proportional basis and warned that future retaliation could be faster, heavier and more painful.
The remarks came after a renewed exchange of military action in the Gulf. The United States said its forces had struck three Iran-linked oil tankers after Iranian forces launched missiles towards two US Navy warships operating in the region. US Central Command said the American vessels avoided the attacks and reported no casualties among US personnel.
Iranian state media also reported that Iranian forces targeted an American remote-controlled vessel as it attempted to enter the Strait of Hormuz. US Central Command rejected that account. The competing claims highlight the increasingly tense military environment around the strategically important waterway.
The Strait of Hormuz has become one of the main flashpoints in the confrontation. It connects the Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and is one of the most important routes for global energy shipments. Any prolonged disruption in the area could affect oil transportation, shipping costs and international energy markets.
The latest escalation follows the end of a period of relative calm between Washington and Tehran. Fighting has intensified again, with the United States carrying out strikes against Iranian targets and Iran responding against American interests and military positions in the region.
US officials have warned Iran against further attacks on American ships, while Iranian officials have continued to signal that Tehran is prepared to retaliate if it believes its security or economic interests are threatened. The exchange of warnings has increased concerns that the confrontation could expand further across the Middle East.
Diplomatic efforts have so far failed to produce a lasting settlement. Despite previous negotiations and temporary reductions in hostilities, there remains significant uncertainty over whether Washington and Tehran can return to talks capable of stopping the current cycle of military escalation.
