Formula One races are expected to become shorter in 2027 as technical changes increase fuel consumption and force organisers to reconsider the traditional race distance.
Formula One is preparing for another important technical change in 2027, with standard Grand Prix distances expected to fall from around 305km to approximately 290km.
The change is linked to revisions to the hybrid power units. A greater contribution from the 1.6-litre combustion engine means fuel flow will rise, making it difficult for some existing cars to complete the current race distance without major modifications.
Teams that planned to carry over their chassis would face significant engineering and cost challenges if larger fuel tanks were required. Reducing the race distance therefore offers a simpler solution. At circuits such as Silverstone, the change could remove roughly two laps from a Grand Prix.
